What is a Fire Door?

Written by Isabel Leckie | 1/15/25 1:00 PM

A fire door is a door with a fire-resistance rating made from materials that can withstand fire and high temperatures for a specified period. They are designed to limit the spread of fire and smoke in a building. Fire doors are rigorously tested to meet stringent safety standards, ensuring they perform effectively during a fire.

The primary function of a fire door is to compartmentalize a building into sections, which helps to slow the spread of fire and smoke. When closed, fire doors create a barrier that can withstand fire for a certain period, giving occupants more time to evacuate safely and firefighters better conditions to tackle the blaze.

They also may reduce overall damage to the property by limiting the spread of fire which can minimize repair costs and downtime.
